QuesTek Innovations Receives International Award

Evanston, IL, October 30, 2004 – Charles J. Kuehmann, Ph.D., President/CEO of QuesTek Innovations LLC, was presented the Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission’s 2004 Industrial Award at the Advanced Materials & Processes Materials Solution Conference and Exposition in Columbus, OH on October 20, 2004. The APDIC Industrial Award acknowledges eminent achievements reached by industries, raising the awareness of the economic, societal and technical importance of applied knowledge in phase diagrams and highlights the cutting edge technology of the company receiving the award.

The award was presented to QuesTek by APDIC’s Chairman, Tetsuo Mohri, for the Company’s “pioneering the Materials By Design® method, integrating thermodynamics, phase diagrams and kinetics, in a systems engineering framework,” which has resulted in QuesTek’s design of a “number of “Best in Class” materials . . ., including Ferrium® C61 for high performance gears and Ferrium® S53 stainless alloy as a replacement for cadmium coated 300M, which is used in landing gear.” Supporting criteria for the award include:

  • economic impact, such as reduced time to market, energy savings, cost reduction by materials substitution and processing, etc.
  • socio-economic impact, making use of human resources, competence and know-how prior to, or instead of, trial and error investments.
  • technological impact by achieving step-performance increase in materials properties, application regimes, setting standards, etc.
  • global coherence impact, by employing global networking, facility sharing and targeted cooperation across national boundaries.
