Greg Olson Receives Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award

Evanston, IL, March 24, 2004 – Gregory B. Olson, Sc.D., Chief Science Officer of QuesTek Innovations LLC, has received the Structural Materials Division Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) for “Advances in the physical metallurgy of steel, as well as the development of the science of Materials by Design® and its application to industrial practice.” The award, established in 1996, recognizes an individual who has made a long-standing contribution to the fundamental understanding of microstructure, properties, and performance of structural materials for industrial applications.

Gregory Olson, is the Wilson-Cook Professor of Engineering Design at Northwestern University. His career accomplishments include: founder and director of Northwestern’s Steel Research Group and Materials Technology Laboratory; associate director, Institute for Design Engineering & Applications; and a founder and Chief Science Officer, QuesTek Innovations LLC—the first Computational Materials Design Company. An author of over 200 publications, Prof. Olson’s honors include: fellow of TMS and ASM, and ASM Alpha Sigma Mu Lecturer. His awards include the ISS-AIME Tennenbaum Award, the Department of Defense’s SERDP Pollution Prevention Award for the computational design and development of Ferrium® S53, and the Sun-Times Chicago Innovation Award for QuesTek Innovations. In accepting the award, Prof. Olson stated that “It is a privilege to aid TMS in the transmutation of our discipline from engineering science to scientific engineering.”
