QuesTek Innovations Named A Fortune 500 Breakout Company For 2005

May 16, 2005

Evanston, IL, May 16, 2005 – QuesTek Innovations LLC was named one of Fortune magazine’s 25 Breakout Companies for 2005 in this week’s issue. This was the 13th year of the annual search to “cull truly innovative companies.” QuesTek was recognized for its Materials By Design® technology and its development of Ferrium® S53, a structural stainless steel that was created for the Department of Defense for use in landing gear and other aerospace components.

Currently, landing gear is manufactured from non-stainless alloys that require a cadmium plating process to prevent corrosion. Eliminating this environmentally hazardous process was one of the primary objectives of a DoD Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program initiative and for which QuesTek received the 2002 DoD SERDP Pollution Prevention Project of the Year award. Ferrium® S53, a structural stainless alloy that achieves a unique combination of properties via a nano-scale carbide distribution, is now in full-scale production under an Environmental Science and Technology Certification Program that is being conducted at Hill AFB in Utah. Ferrium® S53 parts will follow the same production path as current landing gear steels, and components will begin flight testing in 2006.
