Overview
Ferrium® PH48S™ steel is a precipitation hardenable martensitic stainless steel originally designed to replace cast Ti-6Al-4V components through lower cost, comparable specific strength, and elimination of dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion. PH48S demonstrates an excellent combination of strength, toughness, low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT, -80°C), and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance compared to incumbent high-performance stainless steels (e.g. Custom 465, S240, 15-5PH). Double vacuum melted (VIM/VAR), PH48S has been produced and evaluated in cast and wrought forms, and prototype aerospace and defense vehicle components have been produced using PH48S.
Applications
Ferrium PH48S has been evaluated for applications including aerospace structural castings and sports and leisure equipment that require high specific strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance. PH48S can be utilized to replace expensive titanium components and/or eliminate dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion.
