Ferrium® N63™ steel is a nitridable stainless steel for bearing, gear and other wear-critical applications that demonstrates a unique combination of high surface hardness, fatigue life, thermal resistance, core strength and ductility. Double vacuum melted (VIM/VAR), N63 steel has been produced at one production-scale heat, and properties have been assessed across a range of product sizes. Further bearing- and component-specific evaluations and qualifications are currently underway to accelerate Technology Readiness Level. QuesTek designed N63 steel using its ICME technology to provide key benefits including:
- Nitridable for high surface hardenability
- Optimized combination of strength and toughness
- High hardenability for robust thermal processing
- Extended temperature service and ability to survive emergency temperature spikes
Ferrium N63 steel is currently being evaluated for a range of aerospace bearing applications, specifically in components that require corrosion resistance combined with high mechanical properties. It can also be considered for high performance gearing applications where a high hardness stainless steel is needed.
