Current Role at QuesTek
Thomas Kozmel, Ph.D. specializes in advanced experimental and characterization techniques (including SEM-EDS, EBSD, and LEAP) and laboratory management. Thomas works closely with design engineers to provide experimental support and validate ICME model predictions. He is also the technical lead on QuesTek projects, and guides scale-up efforts from the lab scale to prototype production.
Background and Specialization
Prior to joining QuesTek in 2015, he completed his Ph.D. work at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he worked on the development of microstructural process models for several alloy systems. This work included low temperature deformation responses in steels and titanium, and the characterization of high strain rate application aluminum alloys. His Ph.D. dissertation was titled “EBSD Characterization of Low Temperature Deformation Mechanisms in Modern Alloys.”
Honors and Awards
His honors and awards include being selected for the 2014 ASM International Student Paper Contest, having his image included in the 2013 Buehler Microstructural Calendar (October), and receiving recognition for his poster presentations during his graduate work at IIT.

Thomas is active in ASM International, acting as the Chicago regional chapter chair for the 2015-2016 season.
