New iron-based structural amorphous alloy design for Navy

The Office of Naval Research has announced the award of a contract to QuesTek Innovations LLC who will lead an industry / government / academic team to computationally design and develop structural amorphous metal alloys and the processing technology to fabricate useful engineering structures for DoD and aerospace industrial customers.

Structural Amorphous Metals(SAMs) represent a new class of materials produced at low cooling rates whose structure, unlike that of conventional metals, is amorphous or "glassy." Amorphous metals are not confined by limitations of crystalline materials, and as such, behave the opposite of conventional materials. Because of their novel microstructure, amorphous alloys exhibit unique combinations of properties, e.g., hardness, strength, damage tolerance and corrosion resistance. This program seeks to understand and leverage the properties of SAM materials for defense and commercial applications and to develop new amorphous alloys and production methods for cost-effectively producing teem in bulk quantities.
