Other Iron-based Alloys

We are applying our Materials by Design® computational, physics-based approach and technology to rapidly invent, design and develop superior iron-based alloys for wide-ranging service. Iron-based Ferrium® alloys that we have not yet licensed include:

High Performance Soft Magnetic Material

Summary

Under a STTR Phase II project funded by the U.S. Air Force of Scientific Research, we are designing and developing during a new high performance soft magnetic alloy with improved mechanical and magnetic properties and temperature capabilities, which could directly address requirements of Air Force, DoD and other platforms for higher power generation and actuator performance. High performance soft magnetic alloys may also be beneficial in numerous electrical motor and actuator applications, and could lead to a reduction in power system size and weight, and ultimately to an improvement in electrical system efficiency.

Material and Licensing Availability

No material is currently available for testing, evaluation or use; please do not contact us at this time to request samples of this developmental alloy. We’re always interested in speaking with potential licensees and with major end-users/OEMs about material needs and industry developments.

Ferrium® PH48S™

Summary

Ferrium PH48S is a castable and forgeable corrosion-resistant high-strength steel designed to offer increased toughness and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance as compared to commercially available stainless steel alloys, with one project goal being to replace cast titanium components with cast stainless steel components for section thicknesses up to 3” and reduce dissimilar metal connections. We completed a U.S. Marines Corp.-funded SBIR Phase II project to computationally design this alloy.

Material and Licensing Availability

We’re specifically interested in speaking with major end-users/OEMs about their needs for castable, high-strength steels. We’re always interested in speaking with potential licensees and with major end-users/OEMs about material needs and industry developments.

Ferrium C69™

Summary

Ferrium C69 is a member of a new class of carburized secondary hardening gear and bearing steels that utilize an efficient M2C precipitate strengthening dispersion. C69 can achieve case hardness of up to 67 HRC, promoting high surface wear resistance and contact fatigue life. C69 offers greater surface hardenability but lower fracture toughness than C64. Potential applications include camshafts and other components which experience very high surface loads.

Material and Licensing Availability

Only very limited quantities of C69 are currently available for testing, evaluation and use, and it is very unlikely that we can fulfill requests for small amounts or samples.
