AEROSPACE
QuesTek has worked on materials design of aerospace alloys throughout our decade-plus history. Today, the Company
’s Materials
by Design®
technology gives aerospace and military hardware designers access to highly specific materials for their requirements in a much shorter time than previously possible.
For example, QuesTek has successfully designed a unique nanostructured ultrahigh-strength corrosion resistant steel for use in landing gear systems. The new alloy,
Ferrium®
S53
, has corrosion resistant properties that eliminate the need for toxic cadmium metal plating currently used in landing gear. QuesTek is completing an extensive 3-year testing and validation program under the government’s Environmental Security and Technology Certification Program with the U.S. Air Force. QuesTek has licensed the production and sale of
Ferrium®
S53
to Carpenter Technology Corporation (Wyomissing, PA). QuesTek has also worked with the U.S. Navy to develop a high-strength, high-toughness stainless alloy for carrier-based aircraft components.
QuesTek is also working with DARPA, the Department of Defense and with leading aerospace companies to apply Materials by Design to accelerate the insertion of new materials into advanced aerospace components. QuesTek continues contact and bending fatigue evaluations on our high strength gear steels
Ferrium®
C61
and
Ferrium®
C69
. This testing, being conducting at the NASA Glenn Research Center, will demonstrate the advantages of these unique alloys for use in military and commercial aerospace applications.
